Better Match / Queer generative-AI reality series

Two existing couples enter a relationship experiment. Through dates, temporary living arrangements, confessionals and final decisions, Better Match asks whether a new connection can meet the needs an existing relationship could not.

The series

Set in the fictional city of New Town, Better Match follows Alan, Bailey, Michelle and Nikki. It borrows the structure of a dating reality show, but its participants are fictional and its reality-show footage is created with generative AI.

The familiar rituals of unscripted television become a way to explore chemistry, compatibility, conflict and the way an audience reads intimacy. Every apparently candid reaction is shaped by a filmmaking decision.

How it is made

The production combines character development, performance direction, shot planning, continuity, editing and episodic structure. Generative AI builds the images, while the series is shaped through directing and an ongoing editorial process.

Director’s note

Adapted from the project’s published introduction and original press materials.

The project grew from my interest in what reality television asks of its participants. I wanted to investigate emotionally vulnerable relationship situations through fictional characters, without asking real people to expose those moments to a mass audience.

Better Match extends questions from my documentary practice: how people construct identity, how social expectations shape relationships, and how a filmmaker’s choices affect the way we interpret another person.

Can a new connection fulfill the needs an existing relationship could not?
